The art of John Berkey from his 1970s ‘Portal’ poster series. I can’t think of any way to describe Berkey’s style other than ‘majestically messy.’ He was responsible for some brilliant book covers in the 1970s and 80s but he is probably best known for his Star Wars artwork.
I suppose most people have a favorite type of art, and mine is right here. The 70-90’s fantasy scifi art. And starting with one of my most favorite piece of all time by Al Williamson.
There is something about that art from that time, from those genre, that you don’t see anywhere else, and i am thinking of style and colours here. The simplicity, yet the amount of details still. The bright nights, and use of white. Good lord i love it! And it’s a shame, because i won’t see much new stuff coming out like this.
An escaped acrobat from a oppressive Russian circus, Opens fled while touring Australia and has remained with hidden identity ever since. With a love for all that is down right dirty, Opens derives his inspiration from his every day urban surroundings and strives to bring to light this environment with the colours and textures of his creative perception. With a traditional graffiti background and the basic desire to relate his art back to street culture, opens explores both wall and canvases on an individual basis, letting their structure and texture influence the colours and marks made.
